Travel Intelligence
Social platforms based in the region, rather than traditional travel agencies or Western booking sites, increasingly drive destination decisions. 73% of travelers under 40 across the Asia-Pacific credit influencers with directly shaping their destination choice. Influencer-driven campaigns show roughly 5x the return on investment (ROI) of traditional digital ads.
Social Platforms are Shaping Destination Discovery
  • Chinese platforms 小红书 (RedNote) and 抖音 (the Chinese version of TikTok) are where international travel destination choices are made before any booking platform is even opened, generating over 4 billion travel-related content impressions per month.
  • In South Korea, Naver (네이버), the country’s dominant internet portal holding 55-63% of Korean search, is where most Koreans research destinations; most search results point inward to Naver. Naver Blog and Naver Cafe have long-form user posts, reviews, and community forums where detailed traveler write-ups outrank official tourism sites. Naver has additional products such as Naver Map, which most travel-informed users from the country use. KakaoTalk, a super-app (beyond chat) used by roughly 95% of South Korea, is where the actual trip coordination and group planning happens.
  • Indonesians gain travel inspiration on TikTok and Instagram while bookings often shift to WhatsApp due to a preference for conversational commerce over in-app checkout. 94% of Indonesians say influencers directly affect their purchasing decisions, among the highest rates found in regional research.
  • The preferred social media platform generally varies country-to-country. Facebook remains the dominant platform in Thailand, particularly for group and family travel planning, while WeChat is separately growing there for luxury travel planning. Vietnamese travelers lean towards YouTube for longer-form travel content.
Currency

The Japanese yen remains historically weak against most regional currencies, continuing to make Japan a more budget-friendly destination for many international travelers, particularly those from South Korea, Taiwan, and even China despite current Japan-China tensions cutting into one of Japan's largest source markets.

While Alipay and WeChat Pay work at a growing number of merchants in parts of Europe and North America that cater to Chinese tourism, coverage is inconsistent. Travelers typically consider a widely-accepted international card as backup for long-haul trips and confirm foreign transaction fees before departure, since those vary widely by bank and destination.

Intra-Regional Travel
Intra-regional travel dominates international travel patterns across the Asia-Pacific far more than most other world regions. More than half of the international trips from China stay within the larger Asia-Pacific and around 86% of international travel from South Korea remains within the region.
Regional Connectivity Is Expanding
  • An ASEAN Common Visa, modeled on the Schengen Protocol, was formally revived at the ASEAN Tourism Forum in Cebu, Philippines in January 2026, though with no binding timeline. While discussions around the ASEAN Common Visa remain unresolved, ASEAN member countries are pursuing individual digital-entry upgrades: visa waivers being extended in some countries, arrival cards moving online, and e-visa portals expanding nationally. Business travelers specifically have gained ground through China's own five-year multiple-entry visa, introduced in 2025, for ASEAN nationals traveling to the country for business purposes.
  • ASEAN's aviation market has been opening up, fueling the rapid expansion of budget carriers across the region and expanding international flight operations from and to Southeast Asia. ASEAN member-state airlines have been able to fly freely across the bloc since 2016. Externally, ASEAN has agreements with outside partners including China (2010), the EU (2022), and New Zealand (2025), with those with Japan, South Korea, the UK, Hong Kong, and India still under negotiation.
  • Short-haul airline route capacity is expanding the fastest on the region's busiest corridors, opening up secondary cities alongside capitals. Korea–Japan seat capacity is up 89% since 2019, with Seoul Incheon–Tokyo Narita up 58% and Seoul Incheon–Osaka Kansai up 44% over the same period. Korean carriers have been adding routes to smaller Japanese cities beyond Tokyo and Osaka, reflecting a broader regional pattern of airlines chasing growth outside the largest hub-to-hub routes.
  • The Johor Bahru (Malaysia)–Singapore Rapid Transit System has completed construction and is in testing, with passenger service expected in January 2027; this would cut a notoriously congested land crossing down to a 5-minute ride. A direct Kuala Lumpur–Bangkok train service is also expected to launch in 2026. The long-discussed Kuala Lumpur–Singapore High-Speed Rail remains considerably further out despite decades of announcements since the late 1990s and still only at the request-for-proposal stage as of early 2026, well short of construction.
Passport Mobility

There is a 170-destinations gap between the Asia-Pacific region's strongest and weakest passports, which is wider than the spread across most other regions entirely. That divide shows up directly in entry requirements: Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Brunei, and Taiwan passport holders can enter both the Schengen Area and the United States without a prior visa; whereas China, India, Vietnam, Indonesia, and the Philippines require a full visa application for both. That split contributes to the structural reasons why intra-regional and Gulf/Southeast Asian travel often draws more first-time international travelers from this Asia-Pacific market versus first-time international travel for travelers from other regions.

China–Japan Travel Dispute

In mid-November 2025, China's Ministry of Culture and Tourism began urging Chinese citizens to avoid travel to Japan, citing security concerns following remarks by Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi about a potential military response if China acted against Taiwan. The advisory has been reissued repeatedly since, including during the Lunar New Year travel period in late January 2026. In late July 2026, China and Japan’s foreign ministers held their first in-person talks and a multi-party Japanese lawmaker delegation went to Beijing in August 2026. Chinese arrivals to Japan fell 59.0% YoY in August 2026, the ninth consecutive monthly decline. Record August arrivals from South Korea, Taiwan, and Hong Kong have only partly offset the shortfall: Japan's total arrivals fell 9.6% YoY in August and 2.7% for January–August 2026. Chinese airlines have extended flexible refund and change policies on Japan routes, with estimates putting cancellations at roughly 500,000 tickets and the annual cost to Japan's tourism sector at approximately ¥2.2 trillion ($14.2 billion).

Travelers with itineraries connecting through mainland China, Hong Kong, or Japan should confirm current advisory status directly with their government's foreign ministry before booking, as the situation has shifted multiple times since November 2025 and cancellation or rebooking policies vary significantly by airline. South Korea, Thailand, and Vietnam have each seen substantial redirected demand and expanded promotional campaigns to capture Chinese travelers avoiding Japan; Thailand alone reported a 65% increase in mainland Chinese arrivals during the 2026 Lunar New Year period. Travelers booking Japan itineraries who are not affected by the advisory should still expect continued redistribution of visitor volumes across the region and verify individual attraction or accommodation availability.

China

China remains the world's largest international travel source market by a wide margin; its international spend is more than $250 billion, about 1.4x the amount reported for international travel from the U.S. Mainland residents made 176 million border crossings in the first half of 2026, up 10.7% YoY. Only about 11% of China's population (more than 160 million people) currently holds a passport, leaving substantial room for continued growth. Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan drew the largest share of Chinese travelers in 2024 (30.0%), followed by Southeast Asia (14.7%), Northeast Asia (10.6%), North America (8.7%), Europe (6.7%), and Oceania (2.5%); Thailand alone received 3.5 million Chinese visitors in 2023.

Visa-free and visa-on-arrival access has expanded rapidly for Chinese passport holders with a 20% increase in the number of countries offering stays of 15 days or longer — a factor that industry voices cite as making Chinese travel agencies "more adventurous" in the destinations they now offer. South Korea has held the top spot in search interest since spring 2026, driven heavily by K-pop tourism to Seoul. For the October 1–7, 2026 National Day holiday, which many travelers extended to 13 days by combining it with Mid-Autumn Festival, Seoul was the top international destination with bookings up 91% YoY, and average trips ran longer than nine days.

China's Approved Destination Status (ADS) system (中国公民出境旅游目的地) in place since 1995, governs Chinese international travel to many destinations. Under ADS, only government-certified Chinese travel agencies may sell and organize package tours to countries with a bilateral ADS agreement, currently more than 120, and destination governments must issue a special ADS visa for those group tours. This is a government-to-government licensing system for organized group travel, not a blanket restriction: free/fully independent travelers (FIT), business travelers, and those visiting family are not bound by ADS, and can generally travel to non-ADS countries on their own.

Middle East Conflict & Travel Risk

Authorities recommend that travelers with any itinerary touching the broader Middle East region monitor your home country's foreign ministry or travel advisory service in real time before departure and confirm refund and travel insurance terms immediately; many travel insurance policies specifically exclude support during active conflicts. The disruption has hit Gulf hub dependent long-haul routes out of Asia directly: India to U.S. arrivals fell 16.1% YoY as Doha, Dubai, and Abu Dhabi transit connections were disrupted, with India to U.S. airfares up 25–35%, while China to U.S. arrivals fell 1.4% YoY as airfares rose 18–25% from rerouting around closed Gulf airspace. Within the region, Thailand and Malaysia each lost more than 1 million scheduled seats for the May to October 2026 season as airlines cut capacity in response to the conflict. Health Authority Reminders & Advisories
Routine Vaccinations & Destination Requirements

Authorities recommend confirming that routine vaccinations — including tetanus/diphtheria, MMR, and hepatitis A/B — are up to date before any international trip and recommend checking destination-specific requirements (such as Japanese encephalitis vaccination for extended stays in parts of Southeast Asia) several weeks before departure. Dengue and malaria are endemic across large parts of Southeast Asia. No vaccine protects against dengue for most travelers, so mosquito-bite precautions such as repellent, covering exposed skin, and screened accommodation are the primary defense, while malaria prophylaxis may be recommended depending on the specific region and season. Travelers heading to high-altitude destinations should also plan for altitude acclimatization and understand evacuation options before departure, since altitude sickness risk rises quickly above 2,500–3,000 meters.

Travel Insurance & Health Coverage

Within the Asia-Pacific region high-altitude trekking routes have limited nearby medical infrastructure, making helicopter evacuation coverage a practical necessity rather than an optional add-on. Remote-island destinations can mean hours or days from the nearest advanced care, making evacuation coverage matter more than treatment-cost coverage alone.

For travel to the Europe Schengen zone, travelers who need a Schengen visa are legally required to show proof of travel insurance with at least €30,000 in medical and repatriation coverage before a visa is even issued; most home health plans don't qualify and will not produce the certificate embassies require. For travel to the Americas, neither the U.S. nor Canada offer free emergency care to international visitors, and an uninsured hospital stay or ER (emergency room) visit in the U.S. can run into the tens of thousands of dollars. For travel to Africa, many countries require proof of yellow fever vaccination for entry and medical evacuation coverage is especially important given how unevenly distributed advanced medical care is outside major cities.
